As he exposes the mind through semantics, he explains metaphors, the need for taboos, indirect language, and expletives. If you think verbs are simple things that are classified into transitive and intransitive, you’re in for a big surprise. There’s a chapter about the relationship between language and intIt’s hard to review this book. While turning his gaze from one intellectual pursuit to the next, in this collection of essays he addresses nature, evolution, religion, literature, psychology, and scientists, sages, prophets, philosophers, thinkers, and poets who have, down the ages, contributed to human development, making life meaningful. But others may have more patience with it, especially if they don't read it while recovering from a head cold.
And why do we rarely say what we actually mean? Not that anyone actually does this around here...Steven Pinker is as close to a famous linguist as we have today (Noam Chomsky doesn't count, because he's famous for his politics, not his linguistics). How can a choice of metaphor damn a politician or start a war? Surprising, thought-provoking and incredibly enjoyable, there is no other book like it - Steven Pinker will revolutionise the way you think about language.
