For the retail price, I'd never buy it. Even with shipping it was worth it, so so much.I really love my Prera, I carry it every chance I get and fill it up with my best and most expensive inks. These are great pens but not $50 pens.I like the Prera line because it's a clear demonstrator and it is available in several different color themes. There's an orange one I want too because I'm a Tennessee Vols football fan.I liked my metro and when I bought a prera I thought I was upgrading. I love it in the Pilot Prera, and now it is available in a pen less than half the price? For myself, I use a Pilot Prera (F) as my every day sketching pen. Pam: I was really interested and excited to get my hands on a Pilot Metropolitan once I found out from the Pen Addict Podcast that the nibs on the Pilot Metropolitan were interchangable with the nibs on the Pilot Prera, Pilot Plumix (a stub nib), Penmanship (a EF nib) and Kakuno (the smiley face nib). Pilot is an Asian company and uses an Asian scale. Its easy to compare the Cocoon (and the Metropolitan) to the Pilot Prera as well, though the branding on the Prera nib say “super quality” suggesting it may be a slightly higher quality nib. I also like the smaller pen; it's easier for me to hold in my fairly small hand.

That cap is worth its weight in pure packaged satisfaction.Hint: If you can go through all the trouble, Rakuten global has some pretty great prices for the Prera, which makes upgrading to one slightly more justified. I would stick with the metro unless you love the look of the prera.My Prera and Metro perform very similarly. The Pilot Metropolitan nib is superior. Some people complain about the triangular nature of the grip on the Lamy and while that’s not a problem for me, the Metropolitan grip is smooth and round. Also, as others have said - the cap is unbelievable. This is just my theory but I think that Pilot uses Metropolitan (=Cocoon) as a way of attracting overseas fans. The others pretty much have the differences down pat, but the biggest difference is weight, size, and balance. The step on the Metro is very sharp and right where I hold the pen. When I first got it I would just spend several minutes just capping and uncapping it, it's just so smooth.But I also still love my Metros - I have a gold one and a silver python one. The Pilot progression seems to be as follows: Metropolitan - $14, Knight - $40, Prera - $70, and then everything else breaks at least past the $140 range, but usually has at least a 14k nib. It has many of the same features but in cheaper variants (Steel nib vs. gold nib, converter vs… level 1. I thought the converter made it look kind of cheap inside. The larger collector in the Prera resembles that of the Pilot Varsity disposable, the Pilot Petit-1 and the Platinum Preppy. The Prera is really not 'so expensive,' it only looks that way because the Metropolitan is really ridiculously inexpensive and Pilot hasn't adjusted the price of the Prera to compete with the Metropolitan.
The sharper edge on the step-down from the barrel to the grip is still present, so that flaw puts it even with the molded grip on the Lamy Safari. I can write longer with less fatigue versus the Metro. In other words, Pilot is selling Metro (=Cocoon) at lower price outside of Japan. I started with a fine Pilot Metro and found I did not like it atall in comparison to the Lamy nib. It's a daily workhorse with a lovely snap cap.My Metro has never had a hardstart, and it has an EF nib.

I narrowed down my search to the Pilo Prera and the Pilot Metropolitan. The petit1 is pretty cheaply built thought so I recommend the Prera more. The Metropolitan comes in black, silver and gold, with some subtle trim choices.The Lamy can be converted from cartridges using Lamy’s Z26 converter while the Pilot pen uses the CON-50. The grip section has a somewhat awkward "step-down" from the barrel to the section that can cause problems for those who grip their pens high.
