I've always loved Elizabeth Goudge's books - she's been my favourite author for almost five decades and they're novels I've re read several times over the years. It is only Harriet, John s aging former nanny, who holds the family together through her love and empathy. There is a beautiful old house, a large ensemble of interconnected characters and an intense sense of the natural world. I find it beautiful, wonderfully written, and inspiring. Initially everyone in the story is terribly unhappy, but as several take the lead in returning good for evil, their lives are slowly transformed. When I started to read it I was a bit uncertain , but it turned out to be a good read. If anything, it shows the high cost of loving and forgiving.Too bad the cover of this book makes it look like a romance. The characters are so richly delineated and multi-layered, even when they're unsympathetic, that it really makes you think and consider, which is what all good books should do.Another great book by one of my all-time favorite authors.
