My reply was supposed to just be pointing out that VzW 4g has been super slow compared to competitor networks (in my case T-Mobile) in my area. When I moved to London my 4G fell from 15-18Mbit to 1Mbit or worse pretty much wherever I go in Zone 1-3. So you not only benefit from the faster data speed of 4G but an overall better 3G connection too.I think I will stick with my unlimited plan at the moment.
Three was great for me in the Midlands. I’m on iPhone 7.3 uses all it's own infrastructure and also owns significantly less bandwidth than EE and a lot less than O2/vodafone.
Probably the most honest answer is that 4G was defined later than 3G and so benefited for another 10 years of radio research.
