She and Robinson are superb together. Problem is, kind-hearted Jones is an identical dead ringer in looks to a ruthless gangster, " Killer Mannion, " and one day big trouble begins for Jonesy as he is mistaken for the callous mobster. Given the studio (Columbia Pictures) and the screenwriter (Robert Riskin), this is an ideal stuff for Frank Capra. Was this review helpful? With a comically inventive screenplay by Jo Swerling and it's delight in taking potshots at staid institutions, it could have come from the directorial chair of Frank Capra. Edward G. Robinson acted two roles in this movie and did a great job with both of them. DONALD MEEK has an enjoyable supporting role as a restaurant patron who spots innocent Robinson at a nearby table and reports the find to the police, hoping to get the award money for Killer Mannion's capture. This is a story of a meek mild manner clerk named Ferguson(Robinson) who always gets stepped on and used.
This is a place for people who can't get to the theater until the third week a film is out; a place for people who just want to find something great to stream online after the kids have gone to sleep, a place for people whose favorite pastime is to grab a bunch of classic films on DVD from the library and watch them all weekend. Highly enjoyable comedy about meek clerk Arthur Jones (Edward G. Robinson) who is a dead ringer for the most wanted criminal in the country, "Killer" Mannion. Here Robinson plays the role of a mild-mannered bookkeeper, that of a body double in the person of a murderous gangster on the run - Killer Mannion, and he also effectively plays two other roles - that of the bookkeeper pretending to be the gangster, and the gangster pretending to be the bookkeeper. Jean Arthur, (Wilhelmina Clark) gives a great supporting role along with a great cast of veteran actors. And then there is the lovely Jean Arthur as Robinson's coolly self-reliant co-worker, who starts by pitying him and then encourages him, and ultimately falls in love with him. This movie was completely out of left field. He played the meek clerk and the tough gangster equally well. Was this review helpful? There is plenty of drama and comedy. Robert Osborne, the host of Turner Classic Movies, could sell me sand in a desert. In fact, in this movie he plays BOTH a gangster and a wimpy middle-aged man who LOOKS like the gangster. Donald Meek is great fun as a busybody who refuses to believe Jones isn't Mannion.
Robinson is wonderful in both roles. John Ford directs this comedy/crime yarn about a mild mannered office clerk(Edward G. Robinson)being mistaken for a public enemy, 'Killer Mannion'. 14 out of 16 found this helpful.

I've been trying to track down this old Hollywood feature for nearly 40 years since I first saw and loved it. THE WHOLE TOWN'S TALKING sheds a lot of light on this weapons conundrum.
U.S. Law Enforcement Agencies have identified at least 43 million "ticking time bomb" individuals posing a high risk of becoming "active shooters," but the nutty rats have forced the police to React to them on a one-by-one basis while prohibiting any Proactive effort to save lives BEFORE they're lost.
If you are a fan of Jean Arthur and Edward G. Robinson and comedies 1930s style, you will find this most entertaining and amusing film, a very superb choice. This isn't a site for people who just want to talk about the latest hot new movies in theaters right this minute. It's a place that believes that every great movie is a wonderful new treasure, whether you see it the night of its premiere or fifty years later. He’s never late for work and nothing interesting ever happens to him. This movie is (correctly enough) billed as a "crime comedy" but that tone is not entirely maintained throughout the film, and to good effect. Well, we’re not 5 dudes in a room talking about our passion for Fight Club and Braveheart. Arthur is hysterical in her "Mannion" sequence.

Not many actors can pull off this feat and be believable at the same time. Yet the first time his fingers touch a military-style assault rifle he's instantly transformed into a "first-person shooter" firing indiscriminately. 1935's The Whole Town's Talking is a weird movie.
