This book broke my heart. He was slung into the back of a police van by the ‘tall man’ of the title, Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley, the ‘boss man’ of Palm Island.
So well written and a good mix of historical detail with the more recent events of Cameron Doomadgee's death in custody. For such an interesting topic, I came away with very little from this book.

The Tall Man is the story of a vicious and powerful being that has ruined the lives of a community, now marginalised and on the fridges of society.It clearly depicts that when you peel away the surface and the crust that has allowed to build in this community, despite how pot-marked and ugly it might appear on the surface, the fruit inside is still wholesome and full of goodness.

One thing I did feel pretty strongly after reading it was a sense of despair, as there is a big part of me that suspects this was a breakdown of an officer who spent too long in these remote communities. There have been several such incidents of death in custody of an Aboriginal person since I have lived here in Australia. As in The Tall Man, there are victims, family members, affected communities and people still trying to get on with their lives, Black Saturday being ten years ago this month / year in the one of the most fire prone areas on the planet.
