I was having lunch with Kevin just last week and witnessed first-hand the reaction he still gets from people.“One guy came up to our table and started telling him how much he loved the Too-Rye-Ay album and what a huge impact it had on his life, and this is nearly three decades after it first came out.“It was a real eye-opener for me to see how much they, as a band, still touch people!”And Morgan says she was surprised how much free rein she was given to bring her ideas and technical nous to their much-loved material.“Originally I had to rewire my brain a little bit to learn their songs, but I’d been taught early on how to adapt to playing different styles,” says Morgan, who went to a specialist music school in Manchester at the age of nine and then to the Royal College of Music in London.“It was great, though, being given the chance to all chip in and contribute during the rehearsal periods – it made it an exciting environment to be in.”She’s equally effusive about having been tasked with putting together a string quartet to feature on the upcoming reunion record.“The band just finished recording and it’ll be out next summer,” Morgan says.“It’s got that trademark Dexys soulful pop sound the fans are going to love – there’s going to be a lot of very happy people out there.”And she’ll also be making a lot of people a lot closer to home very happy this side of the festive season, by staging the fourth in her annual series of Christmas concerts in the Welsh capital – this year featuring tenor Wynne Evans of Go Compare infamy, mezzo soprano Leah-Marian Jones, celebrated mixed choir Cordydd, Morgan’s own string ensemble and the two winners of BBC Radio Cymru’s Cyfle Cothi – pianist Siwan Rees and soprano Meinir Roberts.“I’d always wanted to put on a concert myself, do the programming, select the artists and give audiences an opportunity to hear them singing the kind of repertoire they wouldn’t normally do,” says Morgan.“Christmas is always such a special time of year for everyone, so it seemed the perfect time to get families together and give them a treat.“Besides,” she laughs, “you can’t turn the TV on at the moment without seeing Wynne popping up in those insurance ads, so the timing was definitely right.“And because everyone knows him better as Gio Compario these days, I think he’s relishing going back to the day job and performing in front of a live audience, especially one on homer turf.”Of all her achievements, though, Morgan adds that she’s most proud of just how eclectic her career has been, appearing with everyone from Dame Shirley Bassey on stage at Glastonbury and Bryn Terfel at his Faenol festival, to touring the world in the orchestra for such huge theatre productions like Les Mis.“I always wanted to do something a bit different with my life and luckily that’s what happened, “ she smiles, adding that there was one job in particular that left even her starstruck.“I managed to be in the video for Take That’s Rule The World single, playing the violin at Abbey Road studios while Gary Barlow and the boys sing just feet away from me.“It was a long shoot, though – 12 hours as I recall.“But hey, I was more than happy to suffer for my art that day,” laughs Morgan.A Feast of Christmas Music takes place at Dora Stoutzker Hall, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff, tomorrow at 4pm.
