In 1969, he published, Design with Nature, which was essentially a book of step-by-step instructions on how to break down a region into its appropriate uses (Wenz, 2).
He discusses poverty, race, environmental justice, gentrification, and many other current issues, although not always in those exact terms. It is really too bad that so many of the concepts expressed in this book have not been able to be implemented in the numerous new towns and planned communities developed since this book was published. McHarg's text, after all, is considered a classic.
"anyone interested in the historical context of landscape designIt's always so tough to enjoy a book that you're forced to read for a meager 10% of your grade in a class, this one, however, was extra difficult to enjoy. There was the Modernist, master-planned capital city of Abuja, Nigeria, and a ludicrous zoo designed at the behest of Iran’s soon-to-be-deposed shah (a project that would ultimately lead to McHarg’s ouster from WMRT). Design for nature has produced reserves, parks, wildlife corridors, restoration projects, and other critical spaces for nature. Get ready for some of the best...In presenting us with a vision of organic exuberance and humandelight, which ecology and ecological design promise to open up forus, McHarg revives the hope for a better world." In this case, it has mainly to do with habitat and with how we Humans carve out our space in it. Every plant and animal on Earth serves a purpose except for humans.
A number of those communities pay lip service to conforming to site features such as topography, streams, rivers, solar exposure, views, wind patterns, etc., but economics, financial constraints, and other realities of the modern world have prevented full implementation.
Ian McHarg’s “Design with Nature” has garnered a great deal of notoriety in the fields of both landscape architecture and conservationism.
His book was revolutioI had to read this for my urban planning class. This required us to look back, again, at the moment and the movement that gave rise to McHarg—one that was led almost entirely by young activists. His philosophies and methods were decades ahead of their time. The narrative of redemptive urban nature is the story of nature which is deliberately imported at any price_ into urban design as a tonic for body and spirit.
We’d love your help. This is a very philosophical book. The selected projects are imperfect—but, we’ve found, they are a good place to start thinking about where we’ve been since 1969 and where we might go by 2069.But it’s where we are today—within sight of decarbonization, adaptation, and purposeful, planetary design— that interests us most. --LewisMumfordIn presenting us with a vision of organic exuberance and humandelight, which ecology and ecological design promise to open up forus, McHarg revives the hope for a better world."
It's not that the book is without its merits.
Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. As the title may suggest, McHarg's goal was to promote what he calls ecological design, an approach to large-scale design that takes into account pre-existing ecology and geography. This book was green at least two decades before it was cool to be green - LEED, etc. You’ll spend a chapter discussing highways and he’ll refer to a road commissioner as a philistine (because he’s the bad guy in this part of the narrative). This book makes you think.I am not in this field so it was a bit more technical than I was expecting but nonetheless I was so pleased to see how he used nature as his tool for creating a landscape. This expanded my knowledge of environmental problems and increased my interest in new issues.
